Reading Through The Bible: #1 – Genesis Chapter 1
This morning I began reading through the Scriptures again, this time taking one verse at a time and asking myself and God what it actually says and what it means. It didn’t take long to come to a basic flaw in what many tell me it says, and what it really says!
As the Bible records the creation account, it gives no reason to separate, by any time period longer than 3 days, the creation of the earth itself, from the creation of the sun, moon and stars. The Scripture says that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” and that there was already water on the face of the earth, although the earth was still in a chaotic state. All this great creation was accomplished in a period of six literal days.
On the same day that He created the earth, He said there should be “light.” Thus concluded the first day which composed a 24 hour day, having “evening and morning.”
An attempt by some to impose a large period of time separating the creation of the earth itself and creation week, has no foundation in Genesis chapter 1 but is, to my mind, a weak attempt to answer the claims of science, that the rocks are millions of years old. The whole of the creation was miraculous; a miracle is the setting aside of the laws of nature, and mankind does not have the capacity to explain how the setting aside of the laws of nature can happen.
When comparing the creation account in Genesis with the only part of the Bible written by the finger of God Himself on tablets of stone, I find complete agreement. In Exodus 20:11 I read this: “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them…”
Nobody has to agree with me. It’s just what I have always believed the Bible says about the origin of the earth and when it came into being.
