Reading Through The Bible: Number 32
Have you ever been enraptured by the sight of a rainbow? I certainly have, in fact, the background picture for my Facebook page is of a rainbow over our valley! Rainbows are special to me because they remind me that we have a covenant-keeping God.
As Noah left the ark, God made a covenant, not only with Noah but with all flesh, that He would never destroy the world with water again. There are other covenants recorded in the Bible between God and His people. He made a covenant with Abraham which passed on to Isaac and to all who would be faithful followers of God. Men have broken the covenant many times, but God never has!
On Mount Sinai He gave Moses the 10 commandments which formed the basis of His covenant with all men for all time. Jesus expressed it best when He said: “If you love Me, keep my commandments!
Many struggle with the terms of that covenant. Giving God their complete allegiance and surrendering their will to live under the control of God rather than themselves, seems to them to be giving away the freedom to please themselves – and it is! But Oh! The peace they forfeit!
For Christians, who accept the will of God, and fall in love with His character as it is expressed in the 10 commandments – “the perfect law of liberty” (James 1:25) there is a calm assurance that they will never be confronted by God’s condemnation. This is the covenant spoken of in Hebrews 10:16,17 where God says:
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
That’s a reason for anyone to have a great day!!
