Reading Through The Bible: Number 64
The Birthright – desired and despised.
The story of Esau and Isaac begins in Genesis chapter 25 and continues through till today. It is the story of those who treasure a relationship with God and those who do not. Although twin brothers, brought up in the same home at exactly the same time and in the same circumstances, they were poles apart in their relationship with God.

However, the restraint of obedience to God, which was the condition of God’s covenant with Abraham, was regarded by Esau as a yoke of bondage! Esau was bent on doing just exactly what Esau wanted to do. To him, hunting and feasting and revelling were the stuff of life! He loved unrestrained freedom to come and go without any reference to God.

Although still unconverted, his conscience seems to have been at least open to God’s prompting to some degree. Although he agreed to deceive his blind father into pronouncing the birthright blessing over himself, he was aware that what he did, in cooperation with his mother, was wrong.

Parental favouritism was no doubt a very real part of this tragic family mess-up with Isaac favoring the Esau and Rebekah Jacob and it sends a clear signal to parents today.

- My need for a personal connection with God which requires loving obedience to Him.
- The amazing freedom that God has given to all of us to choose to follow Him; or to refuse
