Reading Through The Bible: Number 68
Genesis 26 reveals the fact that God’s chosen people do not always have a peaceable life on earth! Isaac is living in the land of the Philistines and while God blesses him with an abundance of livestock etc. his pagan neighbours soon become envious. King Abimelech finally becomes afraid of the size of Isaac’s company and says: “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”
As he settles in a new area, his servants dig new wells which are quickly filled in by the local Philistines. More wells are dug with the same frustrating result, but Isaac maintains a Godly dignity and simply moves on and continues to prosper under the blessing of God. Finally, the king embarks on a royal visit and says: “We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you, that you will do us no harm.” (verses 28,29)
Little did they realise that the greatest blessing that the followers of God enjoy is not seen with the eye! Far greater than any earthly treasure is the peace that permeates the very soul of one who knows and loves Jesus! Philippians 4:6,7 says: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
If there is turmoil in your life today, ask Jesus to come in and change your values and your way of looking at problems. See them as God’s workmen that grow patience and dependence on God and praise God that he promises us that wonderful peace this morning!
Have a great day!
