Reading Through The Bible: Number 82
Genesis 35 records two deaths in Jacob’s (now called Israel) household, that of his mother’s nurse, Deborah and then sadly, his much-loved wife Rachel. Rachel dies in childbirth as her second son Benjamin is born.
Jacob is now the father of twelve sons whose names are listed for us in this chapter. They are literally the “Children of Israel” from whom come the nation by that name! They are: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Amazingly, Jacob’s father Isaac is still alive in Hebron but dies at the age of 185 years and Jacob and Esau are able to bury him together.
This week I attended a memorial service for a young man of just 53 years of age. His 3 sons were in attendance and part of the eulogy was taken by his eldest son whom he had named Israel! Israel had wandered from God and was the burden of his father’s prayers before he died, but as Israel told of his father’s life he said; referring to his relationship with God: “It’s all come together for me in this past week!”
What rejoicing there will be when Jesus comes and parents are raised to learn that their prayers for their children have been answered! Be faithful today friends! Let your children see Jesus in you!
Have a great day!
