Reading Through The Bible: Number 87
“And his master saw that the Lord was with him…”
What a simple way to express so much! Sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph becomes the possession of the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. Although a seemingly spoilt teenager, he transitions from being the favourite son of a very wealthy and Godly pastoralist to being the house-slave of a man who has no knowledge of the God of heaven!
BUT, “his master saw that the Lord was with him…” Some may argue that it HAD to work out that way to fulfill God’s promise to preserve His people. I disagree! Joseph was an individual with free choice just as we all are! Who would have blamed him if he had become so discouraged at how life was treating him that he abandoned God? But he didn’t. Rather, he displayed such a gracious picture of what God’s people should be that Potiphar saw that he was a friend of God!
I confess that although I have 60 years more experience than Joseph had at the time, I still covet his gracious display of faithfulness under extreme duress! But at the same time, I am encouraged that His God is still willing to be “with” me today. How about you?
Have a great day!
