Reading Through The Bible: Number 90
“But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.” Exodus 39:21, 22.
Prison may not seem like prison if you are a prisoner in charge of the prison! That is of course unless you value freedom! However, there was still the one constant that those who love and serve God enjoy: “the Lord was with him.”
In his caring way, Joseph observes one morning that two of his charges are quite obviously sadder than usual. Servants of Pharaoh’s house, they have been in prison for some time for displeasing him is some way. Joseph’s His inquiry into the reason for their sadness is answered by the story of two dreams they have had but are unable to understand
Joseph’s assurance that the interpretation of dreams is simple for God, and that if they tell him the dreams, he will be able to help them, meets with a welcome response and they happily share them with him.
For Pharaoh’s butler the news is good: Joseph assures him that in three days he will be out of prison and back in his job in the royal court. However, the royal baker is given the interpretation that in three days he will be executed.
Seeing an opportunity for justice, Joseph seeks the happy butler’s help: “But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house. For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.” (Exodus 40: 14, 15)
“Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him!” (Verse 23)
Obviously, Joseph’s time of education and preparation is not yet complete, But faithfully he continues his work and his relationship with God! The psalmist’s wise counsel comes to mind just now, and it’s good news for all who want out from the prison house of sin!
“Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help. His spirit
departs, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish. Happy is he who has the
God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God, Who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them; Who keeps truth forever, Who executes justice for the
oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The Lord gives freedom to the prisoners.
Psalm 146:3-7
