Reading Through The Bible: Number 54 The testing of Abraham
Genesis 22 has to contain one of the most moving of all Old Testament passages. It tells how God tested Abraham’s faith by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac, his long-awaited son and heir. It also reveals much for Christians about the relationship between faith and actions!
Abraham was now 120 years old and could well have argued that he was just too old to make a three-day journey and climb a mountain. He could have argued that to do what God was commanding would be seen as barbaric and would be the death of his aged wife as well as himself. He could have argued that since the law of God said “Thou shalt not kill” this could not be a message from God, but a figment of his imagination or a direction by Satan!
But there was no argument from Abraham! His friendship with God had been long and close and he knew His voice! As they ascended the mountain where the sacrifice was to take place, Isaac asks his father: “Where is the lamb?” and Abraham replies that God will provide it. Is it any wonder that James later says: “Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the friend of God.” (James 2:23) James also says in verse 17: “Faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone.”
Can I suggest we substitute the word “actions” here to sidestep the negative connotations of “works”? “Faith, if it has not ACTIONS, is dead” sounds much more acceptable to some.
Many Christians fail to understand the relationship between love, faith and works. They say, “Only believe in Christ, and you are safe. You have nothing to do with keeping the law.” But genuine faith will be evidenced by obedience. Jesus said to the unbelieving Jews, “If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” (John 8:39)
Jesus also declares plainly: “If you love Me, keep My commandments!” (John 14:15)
And John, who talks so much about love, tells us: “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3
Those who truly love God, love to do His will as an expression of appreciation for salvation ALREADY bestowed upon them, NOT to earn it!
Have a great day!
